"...Fluid positivity and careful complacency. [Maddy Butcher]'s pieces do not fade into the background. Her work sets out to engage and energise but also to support an environment or individual. She paints faces, moods and colours with vibrancy and a playfulness that’s more thoughtfully constructed than it first appears."
Maddy has painted a trail of large-scale, colourful abstracts and big, bold and intricate portraits of positive subjects and energetic themes. With an MA in Fine Art at Edinburgh College of Art & Edinburgh University, Maddy has exhibited at the Royal College of Arts, Dubai World Art Show, Atlanta Tech Square, the Barber Institute, Brooklyn Brewery, Beirut Biel, and locations across South Carolina, Georgia, Italy and abandoned Scottish churches. Her street art, live art and murals have been found in New York, London, Dubai, Marseilles, Barcelona and a school in remote Northern India.
She has worked with brands including VW, Vans, Credit Suisse, Mitsubishi, Cosmopolitan, the Body Shop, Kraft, Radisson Blu, Campo Viejo and Rixos. More recently she has made a move towards community art - out of a desire to encourage more female painters, and more artists from underprivileged communities across South Asia and East Africa.
Previously an award-winning copywriter for agencies including Saatchi & Saatchi & TBWA, in 2016 Maddy abandoned full-time advertising to concentrate on Art full time. Alongside large scale murals and illustration work, she has taught life-drawing classes and abstract art sessions in Dubai's Al Serkal Avenue, provided brand-consultancy workshops, as well as curating and presenting a series of discussion seminars for women in creative industries. Her goal is to bridge the gaps between the personal authenticity of any form of art and how art is the interpreted and shared in the media.
Based in Tecom, Dubai.
